Female War Veterans Run For Office

The past few years has seen plenty of war action for our men and women in the military. From Iraq to Afghanistan, our military has been very active doing their jobs, serving this country. Because of newer guidelines and old barriers being broken, women are now seeing roles in what is in effect, combat. The United States for the first time in history has many women returning as "real" war time veterans. Never before have women taken such an active role. There are a few female combat veterans now running for political office. Here are the ones we know about.

Tammy Duckworth was a captain with the Army National Guard. She was co-pilot of a Black Hawk helicopter that was struck down in Iraq, 2004. She lost parts of both legs. This is her second time running. She is an Illinois Democrat running against Tea Party freshman Joe Walsh. Duckworth was also assistant secretary at Veterans Affairs. They are running for The House of Representatives. Tammy Duckworth has just paid $2000 in back taxes and penalties due to improperly taking two homeowner exemptions.

Tulsi Gabbard was also with the Army National Guard. This specialist in the medical unit, 29th Brigade, trained Kuwaiti anti-terrorism units. Gabbard is 31 and resides in Hawaii. She is a democrat, running for a seat in The House of Representatives.

An Air Force Academy graduate, Martha McSally, is actually the first women to ever fly a fighter in real combat. Her aircraft? An A-10 Warthog (A-10 Thunderbolt II). She also commanded a fighter squadron, also a first for females. McSally, a Republican, is vying for the seat formerly held by Gabrielle Giffords.

Think your vote does not matter? It matters to the races these women are in. Just like all other political races. So, get out and vote. Only you can make a difference in where this country is headed. Your vote serves two purposes. It puts people in office who will do the right thing, but it also prevents people who should not be elected.

Military Divorces up

Divorces of military service members is up nearly 1 percentage point since 2001.

There were 27,312 among active duty service personnel in 2009, ending in September.

That puts the divorce rate at 3.6% Women in the military have a much higher percentage of divorce than their male counterparts. 7.7& for women, 3% for men.

What this shows is that military service puts a slight strain on marriages.

It puts more of a strain on womens' marriages than men. As much as people scream for equality in the service and women in combat, we must realize the strain this causes on the normalcy of human lives.

The old saying sued to go that the government didn't issue you a wife.

But because of recent benefits that were almost nonexistent years ago, young people join the service and think of marriage at the same time.

We have made it easy for people to think the military supports marriage. We give benefits for housing, medical, as well as other benefits for spouses and dependents.

This has created a false sense of security. Basically thinking the military is supporting marriage and families. The truth is, it's not.

The mission of the military is to kill people and break things, to put it bluntly. Your family comes second to your duty. Today, young people expect it to be reverse.

Before you join the service and get married, think long and hard about the strain it will put on any relationship you will have with your spouse and children. All will need to make some sort of sacrifice. If you are not able, willing, and ready to make sacrifices, a military marriage will not last.

Divorces for military members decreases morale and readiness. Get help.

Veterans under new GI Bill are complaining about slow or lack if money

More than a quarter of a million veterans have signed up to collect the New GI Bill education benefits as of August 1, 2009. Unfortunately, it seems as if the checks are not in the mail. Many veterans across the country are scrambling to stay in school as a result of missing money.

According to Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki on Friday, veterans have a right to complain. The way the bill was written, it can take weeks to get the money approved and in the mail.

Many colleges have delayed fees and tuition for veterans until the education aid comes. But, what about living expenses? This is what the money is in dire need of at the moment. Veterans returning to college are not getting the money they need for living expenses.

Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki stated as well that emergency funds are being sent. These emergency funds can be as much as $3,000 per veteran. The Secretary has promised that next year, things will be different and faster.

If you are a veteran struggling to stay in school, contact your local veterans affairs office. The emergency money is being sent to them. By all means, do this as soon as possible!

Now, how many of you think this is the way our veterans should be treated? How long does it take to cut a check and get funds out? This is the computer age. How long? A few minutes? Why does America still year after year, war after war, great service after great service, STILL dishonor it veterans this way?

Whatever your feelings are health care. Stop and think. Does the government run any kind of program the way it should? Not when it comes to veterans. We cannot fathom why the process for getting education money cannot be automatic and quick. After World War II, millions of veterans went back to school with NO problems. What have we done since? Screwed most programs up, that's what.

We salute the colleges and universities that have delayed fees and tuition for veterans. How about some landlords and mortgage companies doing the same?

Trouble with Veterans Getting VA Home Loans

There are reports of trouble for veterans trying to get VA Home Loans.
Here are some of the examples of trouble spots you need to look out for:

Cash is king. Many VA Home loan applicants are being overlooked by banks that get offers for cash. For example, it has been reported that veterans seeking home loans were applying for a $300,000 mortgage, but someone offered $270,000 cash and the bank took it. This cash over VA Loan has been reported many times. Beware! This is totally unfair.

Veterans have also been getting low balled on home appraisals. For example, you want to buy a home for $300,000, make an offer, but the VA appraises it at only $280,000. You don't get the loan. Then, someone else offers $310,000 and gets the home via a conventional lender that appraises the house at over $310,000. Beware of this as well. Totally unfair.

The last thing with VA Home Loans you need to be aware of is that the VA will not loan on a home that needs work. The problem is there is no definition of what "needs work" is, and many homes on the market are foreclosures and need work! Catch-22. We have heard of a VA loan being denied because of peeling paint. Very minor, but again the house "needed work"!

Banks are also stalling on VA Home Loans for the above reasons.

Here's the lowdown on getting a VA Home Loan. If you know the house will get multiple offers, chances are someone is going to bid higher than the VA will pay. Second, the house needs to have no repairs needed. At least visible that get noticed on an inspection. Work with a bank that specializes in VA Home Loans.

VA Home Loans are some of the best available. It is the ONLY loan left that allows you to put zero down. It is a way of thanking our veterans, but the real estate market being what it is, it is getting difficult.

Female Veterans Have not got Proper Health Care

The Senate on Tuesday was holding hearings on the way female veterans have struggled to get health and other needed care. Easy to believe, but it is not right. When we think of veterans, we automatically think MEN. But women have been a huge part of our military force since the beginning. Female veterans have shown they can function in all capacities. They deserve better. We hope things change quickly for the brave women who are doing their duty to the utmost in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. Don't just think boys when talking about supporting our troops. The girls are in the fight as well. When you see a female member of the armed forces, give them a special thanks.

Also, it may be a good idea to mention that even though they are having trouble getting help, it is still a great career move for many girls. There is no shame in the military. It is a good job and honors your country. Men and women both are vital elements of the finest military in the world.
